Paper Flashcards

Flashcard work with partners is a good way to reach several different learning styles at once: looking at the pictures, the visual; saying the words, the oral/aural; and flipping the cards, the kinesthetic. For similar reasons, students should always do something to prepare their own cards—cutting, writing definitions, and/or organizing.
Ideas:
  • Teacher or partner says word, and student shows correct picture.
  • Slap game: Cards are laid out between the partners. Teacher says the word, and the first person to hit it wins it. Then continue with sentences. After playing a while the teacher can start to give unusual sentences to keep them listening ("For breakfast, I always eat…ice cream.") (This is similar to the flyswatter game, but everybody plays at the same time.
  • Students draw three cards and combine into a sentence (logical or bizarre).
  • Students create a sentence with each word shown.
  • Students ask their partners questions about pictures ("What is the weather like?"
    "Where is the cat?, "etc.).
  • Concentration
